About
I have been teaching maths since September 2000 and along the way have been interested in making things that have a mathematical basis. Many of these I will show students how to do in various lessons.
I was first taught how to make a Sonobe unit or 'Limping Seagull' at the ATM Conference in 2001 and since then I have made many shapes using the units. The largest of which I spent one sunny afternoon making in a garden.
Many of my students over the years have made shapes using them and as time has gone on and the internet has developed it has been easier to find new designs of modular origami units and instructions on how to make them.
I have often been asked where I have found various instructions and a lot of the time I cannot remember and so I thought I would try and make a catalogue of the things I made and links to where I found the instructions and who originally created them.
It may be the case that nobody other than myself ever sees this blog in which case it will end up doing what it was meant to do and just remind me of what I have made and where I found out about it. If anybody else comes across it, then I hope you'll find it useful.
I have also enjoyed making mathematical designs by construction or digitally using various software packages. A lot I have spotted on Twitter/X or Pinterest and tried to recreate myself. Again I have tried to show my students as much as I can when it comes to constructing polygon etc.
Anyway, if anybody does find this and uses any of the links, or it inspires anyone to make something they haven't made before then I do hope it is useful. I know that if I had found this back in 2000/2001 I would have spent a while going through it and making the stuff. But then if this had existed back then I wouldn't have needed to make it now and I wouldn't be writing this.
